Free Weights vs Machines: Which Is Better for Building Muscle?
Walk into pretty much any gym and you'll see two different approaches to training. On one side you've got people around the squat racks, benches and dumbbells. On the other, you've got people moving from machine to machine.
Somewhere along the way, the fitness world decided these two things needed to compete with each other.
Free weights vs machines. Which one is actually better for building muscle?
I've always preferred free weights personally. There's something satisfying about putting another plate on the bar, picking up heavier dumbbells and physically seeing your strength improve. If you gave me the choice between a barbell and a machine for most exercises, I'd probably head towards the barbell.
But personal preference and what actually works aren't necessarily the same thing.
The longer I've trained, the more I've realised that the argument over which is "better" is probably missing the point. If your goal is building muscle, both free weights and machines can be extremely useful. The important thing is understanding what each one gives you and then using that to build a training programme that actually suits you.
What Do We Mean by Free Weights?
Free weights are weights that aren't fixed into the movement path of a machine. Barbells, dumbbells and kettlebells are the obvious examples.
A barbell bench press is a free-weight exercise. So is a dumbbell shoulder press, Romanian deadlift, dumbbell curl or walking lunge.
The important difference is that you're responsible for controlling the weight through space. You have to stabilise it, coordinate the movement and maintain your position while producing enough force to actually perform the exercise.
That freedom is partly what makes free weights so useful, but it's also what makes many free-weight exercises more technically demanding.
Machines take some of that responsibility away from you. A chest press, leg extension, hamstring curl, pec deck or machine row guides at least part of the movement.
Cable machines sit somewhere between the two because they allow considerably more freedom than most fixed machines, but the resistance is still being provided through a cable system.
And despite what you sometimes hear around gyms, using a machine isn't cheating. Your muscles don't know whether the resistance came from an expensive piece of gym equipment or a lump of iron attached to a bar. They respond to the demands you place on them.
Why I've Always Preferred Free Weights
This is where my own preference comes into it.
I've spent plenty of time using both, but free weights have always been the side of training I enjoy more. I like having to control the weight myself. I like the feeling of physically moving something rather than following a completely predetermined path, and I find progression with free weights particularly satisfying.
There's something very simple about adding another plate to a bar.
Maybe you used to bench 60kg and now you're benching 80kg. Eventually that becomes 100kg. Or perhaps you started shoulder pressing the 16kg dumbbells and months later you're using the 24s or 30s.
Those numbers aren't the only way to measure progress, but they're difficult to ignore.
You can look back and know:
I couldn't do that before. Now I can.
That's always been one of the things I've enjoyed about training.
Obviously, progression doesn't mean throwing another 20kg on the bar every week and hoping for the best. Adding repetitions, improving technique, increasing your range of motion or controlling the same weight better can all represent progress.
But for me, free weights make that process feel particularly obvious, and I enjoy that.
Why Free Weights Work So Well
There's a reason exercises such as squats, bench presses, deadlifts, rows and overhead presses have been staples of resistance training for so long.
They allow you to progressively train hard while often involving several muscle groups at the same time.
Take the barbell bench press. Your chest is doing a lot of the work, but your shoulders and triceps are heavily involved as well, while other muscles help maintain your position and control the bar.
Compare that with something like a pec deck, where the exercise is much more focused on the chest.
That doesn't automatically make the bench press better. They're simply different tools.
Free weights also give you freedom to adjust how you perform an exercise rather than being completely locked into the dimensions and movement path designed by the manufacturer of a particular machine.
For some people that feels much more natural. For others, a particular machine might actually feel better.
That's one of the reasons I don't think exercise selection should ever become completely rigid.
The Problem With Treating Free Weights as Superior
Even though I personally prefer free weights, I don't agree with the attitude that they're somehow the "proper" way to train.
You sometimes see this idea that serious lifters use barbells and dumbbells while beginners use machines.
It doesn't really make sense.
A machine doesn't suddenly stop being capable of stimulating muscle growth because you've been training for ten years.
In fact, machines can become incredibly useful when you're already strong and training hard.
Imagine you've started a chest session with a heavy barbell bench press and then moved onto dumbbell pressing. By that point your chest is tired, your triceps are tired and the smaller muscles helping stabilise everything have already done plenty of work.
Does every exercise after that really need to require the same level of stability and coordination?
Probably not.
Sitting in a well-designed chest press and concentrating on driving the target muscle hard can make perfect sense.
That's why, despite preferring free weights, I still use and value machines.
Machines Let You Focus on the Muscle
This is probably one of the biggest advantages machines have for bodybuilding-style training.
A machine removes some of the other things you need to think about. You aren't balancing a bar or controlling two separate dumbbells. The machine provides much of the stability, allowing you to concentrate more heavily on producing force through the muscle you're trying to train.
Think about training legs.
A squat can be an excellent exercise, but there's a lot happening during a squat. Your quads are working, but so are your glutes, adductors, trunk and other muscles involved in maintaining your position and controlling the movement.
Now compare that with a leg extension.
You sit down, get yourself into position and extend your knees. The exercise gives you a straightforward way of putting a lot of work through your quadriceps without everything else becoming the limiting factor.
That simplicity isn't a weakness.
Sometimes it's exactly what you want.
Machines Can Also Make Hard Sets Easier to Manage
Training hard with free weights sometimes creates a practical problem: what happens when you can't complete another repetition?
With some exercises it isn't a big issue. If you're doing dumbbell lateral raises, you're unlikely to find yourself in much trouble.
Being underneath a heavy barbell bench press without appropriate safety equipment or a spotter is a different situation.
Machines can make approaching muscular failure easier to manage because you don't have the same problem of potentially becoming trapped underneath the weight. In many cases you simply return the machine to its resting position.
That doesn't mean every machine exercise needs to be taken to complete failure. It doesn't.
But having the ability to safely push a set extremely hard can be useful, particularly later in a workout when fatigue has already built up.
Are Machines Safer Than Free Weights?
Not automatically.
Machines can reduce some risks because they provide stability and control the movement path, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to train badly on one.
Load a machine far too heavily, use poor technique and repeatedly force your joints through a position that doesn't feel right and you can still create problems.
Machines have another limitation too: they're designed to accommodate lots of different people, but human bodies aren't all built exactly the same.
We've got different limb lengths, heights, proportions and individual movement preferences.
A machine that feels fantastic for one person might feel horrible for somebody else.
If a particular machine consistently forces you into a position that doesn't feel right, there's no reason you have to use it just because somebody online described it as the perfect exercise.
The same applies to free weights.
An exercise being popular doesn't automatically mean it's right for everybody.
Free Weights Require More Skill
There's no getting around this.
Learning to squat properly takes more practice than sitting on a leg extension. Learning to deadlift takes more coordination than using a seated hamstring curl, and learning to bench press safely takes more practice than using many chest press machines.
I don't necessarily see that as a disadvantage. Learning those skills is part of training and, personally, it's another aspect of free weights that I enjoy.
But beginners sometimes make the mistake of thinking they must immediately perform every famous compound exercise.
You don't.
Nobody gets extra points because their first gym programme contains barbell squats, deadlifts and bench presses.
If you're completely new to resistance training, machines can provide a straightforward way to start applying resistance while gradually learning more complex movements.
You can introduce free weights as your confidence and technique improve.
So Which One Actually Builds More Muscle?
This is the question everybody actually wants answered.
The slightly boring answer is:
Both can build muscle.
The evidence comparing machine and free-weight resistance training doesn't give us a good reason to believe that one method universally dominates the other for muscle growth when training is appropriately performed.
And that makes sense when you think about what building muscle actually involves.
Your muscles need sufficient resistance and challenging training. Over time, you need to progressively provide enough stimulus for them to adapt. Then you need enough food, protein, sleep and recovery to support that process.
None of those things specifically require a dumbbell.
And none of them specifically require a machine.
If you can perform an exercise effectively, progressively train it and recover from what you're doing, it can potentially contribute towards building muscle.

Strength Makes the Answer Slightly Different
If your goal is strength rather than simply building muscle, the answer becomes more specific.
Strength is partly a skill.
If you want to become better at barbell squatting, you need to practise barbell squatting.
Getting incredibly strong on a leg press can build strong legs, but it won't automatically make you equally skilled at performing a heavy squat because the movements aren't identical.
The same applies to bench pressing, deadlifting and other specific lifts.
Someone who only trains on machines may build plenty of muscle and general strength, but if you suddenly put them underneath a barbell, they haven't spent time developing the technique required for that particular movement.
So if your goal involves powerlifting, Olympic lifting or simply wanting to improve a particular free-weight exercise, practising those movements becomes important.
If your main goal is simply:
I want to build more muscle.
You have considerably more freedom.
Why I'd Still Use Both
My personal preference is free weights.
My recommendation isn't free weights only.
Those are two different things.
If two exercises are both capable of effectively training a muscle, there's nothing wrong with favouring the one you actually enjoy. Enjoyment matters because you're far more likely to train consistently when you don't hate your programme.
For me, that usually means free weights form a big part of my training.
But machines are extremely useful tools, and refusing to use them simply because I prefer barbells and dumbbells wouldn't achieve anything.
A chest workout, for example, could include a barbell bench press, incline dumbbell press, machine chest press and cable fly.
You've now used free weights, a machine and cables.
Your chest doesn't care that you've betrayed one side of an internet argument.
It just knows it's been trained.
The same idea works across almost every muscle group. You could squat and then use a leg press. Romanian deadlift and then use a hamstring curl. Perform a free-weight row followed by a chest-supported machine row.
You don't have to choose one camp.
When I'd Prioritise Free Weights
I'd give free weights more attention if your goal involves becoming stronger on specific barbell or dumbbell exercises, you enjoy compound movements or you simply prefer the freedom they give you.
They're also useful when you train somewhere with limited equipment because a relatively small selection of barbells, dumbbells and benches gives you an enormous number of exercise options.
And then there's personal preference.
I don't think this should be dismissed as unimportant.
If you enjoy bench pressing considerably more than using a chest press and both movements work well for you, there isn't anything wrong with choosing the bench.
Training is something you're hopefully going to be doing for years.
You might as well enjoy some of it.
When I'd Prioritise Machines
Machines become particularly useful when your main goal is hypertrophy, you want to isolate a particular muscle, you're training hard without a spotter or you're already fatigued from heavier compound movements.
They can also be useful for beginners who want to start resistance training without immediately having to learn several technically demanding movements at once.
And sometimes a particular machine just feels incredibly good.
If you've ever found a chest-supported row, hack squat, plate-loaded chest press or another machine that seems to fit your body perfectly, you probably understand what I mean.
Use it.
There's no prize for deliberately choosing the more awkward exercise.
Don't Turn Exercise Selection Into a Religion
Fitness has a strange habit of turning personal preferences into universal rules.
Someone gets great results from barbell training and suddenly everybody needs to train with barbells.
Someone else switches heavily towards machines and decides free weights are outdated.
Neither position makes much sense.
Your training programme isn't supposed to prove which fitness philosophy you belong to.
It's supposed to help you progress.
If an exercise feels good, allows you to effectively train the intended muscles, gives you a sensible range of motion and provides room to progressively improve, it's probably doing something useful.
Whether there's a cable, weight stack or barbell attached to it matters less than people sometimes pretend.
Free Weights vs Machines: The Bottom Line
If you're asking what I prefer personally, it's free weights.
I enjoy them more. I like controlling the weight myself, I enjoy compound lifts and I find seeing the plates or dumbbells gradually get heavier one of the most satisfying parts of training.
But if you're asking which I'd recommend for building muscle, my answer is both.
Use free weights where they suit your goals and where you enjoy performing them. Use machines where they allow you to target a muscle effectively, train hard or add useful work without unnecessarily complicating your session.
You don't need every exercise to be a compound lift.
You don't need every exercise to be a machine either.
And you definitely don't need to base your programme around what somebody across the gym thinks counts as "proper" training.
Free weights and machines are both tools.
Learn what each one is good at, figure out what works for your body and then concentrate on the part that actually matters:
Getting stronger, training consistently and making progress.
